Jiří Langmajer was born in the city of Plzeň, western Bohemia, into a musical family. He studied music and drama at the Prague Conservatoire (1981–1987). After graduation, he worked with several drama companies before settling in a long-term engagement at Prague’s Theatre pod Palmovkou, where he stayed until 2005. Since then he has operated on his own as a free-lance actor, even though he still works closely with his former home company, where he has to his credit a formidable gallery of leading parts (Peer Gynt, Caligula, Oedipus, Amadeus, and others). He has guest appeared in Prague’s National Theatre, Musical Theatre in Karlín, Black Theatre, Studio Tempest, and Viola. In the last two seasons he has created two memorable roles in the Shakespearean Series staged at Prague Castle: namely, Edgar in King Lear, and Hamlet. In 1999 he won the Thalia Award for actors under 33, for his Caligula. His account of Hamlet earned him a nomination for the Alfred Radok Award, and once again for the Thalia Award. He has appeared in many television plays and films, as well as in several musical productions.
